The AES Corporation is a United States power company listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker AES and based in Arlington, Virginia. Founded in 1981 as Applied Energy Services, it owns regulated electric utilities in the Midwest and operates generation and energy infrastructure in the United States, Latin America and several other markets.

Generating portfolio and scale

  • 34.7 gigawatts of generation in operation and a further 5.7 gigawatts under construction as of 2025
  • Annual revenue of 12.2 billion US dollars in 2025
  • Output equivalent to the residential electricity needs of about 18.7 million households, or 60 million people, in the markets it serves
  • A fleet spanning solar, wind, hydro, natural gas, coal and battery storage, alongside LNG infrastructure

The company sells power to technology and data centre operators, mining and metals producers, commercial and industrial businesses, and utilities and cooperatives, and groups its commercial offer as carbon-free energy and grid infrastructure. It states that it is a top seller of clean energy to corporations and one of the largest suppliers of power to technology companies: in March 2026 it reported 11.8 gigawatts of signed agreements to supply power to major technology firms, and its newsroom notes a fifth consecutive year as a top clean energy provider to United States and Americas corporations in the BloombergNEF rankings.

Regulated utilities and regional businesses

AES Indiana supplies retail electric service to more than 530,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers in Indianapolis and surrounding central Indiana communities. AES Ohio serves more than 539,000 customers across a 6,000 square mile area of west central Ohio, operating more than 1,600 miles of transmission lines, 13,000 miles of overhead distribution lines, 4,500 miles of underground distribution lines and 160 substations feeding 490 distribution circuits, together roughly 1.1 million customers.

Outside the United States the company operates in Chile, Colombia, Argentina, Mexico, Panama, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Puerto Rico, Bulgaria and Vietnam, and it runs local websites for Hawaii and Miami Valley Lighting. AES El Salvador serves over 1.56 million customers through the distribution companies AES CAESS, AES CLESA, AES EEO and AES DEUSEM, and generates power from solar and biogas plants including the Bosforo project. The company's regional offices include Panama City and Santiago in Chile.

Safety, technology and company history

AES has invested in digital operations as well as generation. It has deployed an artificial intelligence safety platform across its United States operations, reporting more than a 50 percent reduction in the time needed to complete safety incident investigations, better root cause identification and improved visibility of repeat and systemic risks. An in-house innovation programme, AES Next, develops and scales technologies intended to improve the reliability of its generation and grid businesses, while the group's sustainability pages set out its work under people and communities, planet and accountability headings, covering community programmes alongside circular economy and land use topics.

The company connects its clean-energy strategy to its history: in 1989 it recorded what it describes as the first documented carbon offset programme in the United States by planting 52 million trees in Guatemala, and in 1988 it became the first independent power producer in the United States.
