Chart Industries designs and builds equipment that liquefies, stores, moves and regasifies industrial gases, and it is one of the largest suppliers of brazed aluminium heat exchangers and cold boxes to the LNG industry. Its corporate headquarters are at 2200 Airport Industrial Drive, Suite 100, Ball Ground, Georgia 30107, and the group's history is dated by the company to 1854, when the Scottish engineer James Howden started a marine engineering firm in Glasgow. Chart Industries is part of Baker Hughes. Its operations span manufacturing in the United States, Europe, India and China, with sales and service locations listed for Africa, the Americas, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.
Three product groups plus aftermarket
Chart presents its cryogenic business in three groups. Gas storage and distribution covers bulk cryogenic tanks, ISO containers, transport trailers, vaporizers, MicroBulk storage and delivery systems, packaged and liquid gas cylinders, LNG and hydrogen fuelling stations, vacuum insulated pipe, flow measurement and safety valves. Heat transfer systems covers brazed aluminium and air-cooled heat exchangers, cold boxes, hairpin and specialty exchangers, nitrogen rejection units, turboexpanders, and complete helium, hydrogen and LNG liquefaction plants built around the company's IPSMR process technology. Rotating and compression equipment is sold under the Howden name and includes centrifugal, reciprocating, diaphragm and screw compressors, centrifugal blowers, axial and centrifugal fans, cooling fans, steam turbines, electrostatic precipitators and rotary air preheaters.
Repair, service and leasing sit alongside under an aftermarket organisation that markets the Howden Uptime condition monitoring platform, runs an aftermarket academy for compressor training and operates dedicated cryogenic service centres in Europe and the United States. Spare parts for cryogenic, beverage carbon dioxide and LNG equipment are sold through the Chart Parts business. Named brands include Chart Ferox, ChartMarine, ChartWater, Chart China, Air-X-Changers, Hudson, Smithco, Cryonorm, VCT Vogel, VRV, IMB, FEMA, Fronti, GOFA, Spencer Turbine, CPI, Cryo Technologies, LA Turbine, Earthly Labs, Flow Instruments and Rothemühle.
Manufacturing and service footprint
Brazed aluminium heat exchangers are produced at La Crosse, Wisconsin, where the first such unit was brazed by the Trane Company in 1941 and where the Holmes brothers based the business they bought in 1986. Air-cooled exchangers and Tuf-Lite fans are built at Beasley, Texas, and Franklin, Indiana also produces brazed aluminium and air-cooled units and vaporizers.
Cryo Technologies in Allentown, Pennsylvania builds helium and hydrogen liquefiers; Howden Americas is based in Depew, New York; CPI's aftermarket operation for lubrication systems and compressors is in Baton Rouge, Louisiana; and the group's leasing business and cryogenic after-sales operation are in Brentwood, New Hampshire. Chart Ferox runs the European technology centre at Decin in the Czech Republic, where the group's liquefied biogas refuelling station for the Stockholm area was engineered, and Howden builds large reciprocating compressor packages in the Netherlands. Peter Brotherhood in Peterborough, England supplies steam turbines, and a UK aftermarket facility opened in Chesterfield in 2025. Howden Africa operates from Midrand, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Gqeberha, Middelburg and Sasolburg, and Howden and ChartWater both have operations in India.
LNG, gas processing and industrial gas work
In May 2025 the company shipped the first two jumbo cryogenic tanks from its Theodore, Alabama facility, each with a capacity of 1,700 cubic metres, which it described as the largest shop-built cryogenic tanks yet produced. In July 2025 LNG Alliance selected Chart's IPSMR process technology and modular liquefaction solution for the Amigo LNG export facility planned at Guaymas, Sonora in Mexico with a capacity of 7.8 million tonnes a year. An award from Bechtel Energy in October 2025 covered air-cooled and brazed aluminium heat exchangers and cold boxes for Sempra Infrastructure's Port Arthur LNG Phase 2 development in Jefferson County, Texas.
Chart equipment also handles helium, industrial gas and carbon dioxide duties, and the group's history records the delivery of the largest integrated nitrogen rejection unit in 2012 and the supply of exchangers to the first baseload LNG plant using the ConocoPhillips Optimized Cascade process in 1998. Its Howden business supplied large reciprocating compressor packages built in the Netherlands to Indian customers, announced on 30 October 2025; those machines are rated to 20 MW and run at 260 to 1,000 revolutions per minute, while the group's steam turbines range from 10 kW to 40 MW and account for more than 1,000 MW installed in waste-to-energy plants.
Carbon capture, water and low-carbon fuels
ChartWater, formed in 2021, supplies water treatment equipment through the AdEdge and BlueInGreen businesses in Duluth, Georgia and Fayetteville, Arkansas. Small-scale carbon capture is handled by Earthly Labs, whose CiCi system was installed at the Real Ale Brewing Company in Texas, announced on 21 January 2026, and cryogenic carbon capture technology came with the acquisition of Sustainable Energy Solutions in 2020.
On Madeira, the utility Gaslink has used a fleet of Chart ISO containers since 2014 to move LNG to a gas-fired power station; the company reports more than 10,000 deliveries that avoided 270,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide, over 3,000 tonnes of sulphur oxides, more than 12,000 tonnes of nitrogen oxides and over 150 tonnes of particulates. Howden's EMISSIONGUARD TR squared packing rings are credited with preventing an estimated 20,173,000 normal cubic metres of vent gas from leaking, equivalent to about 60,500 tonnes of carbon dioxide. On 16 January 2026 Chart named Ratermann Manufacturing its exclusive North American distributor for MicroBulk and portable liquid cylinder tanks, and Chart Ferox was recognised in a Czech environmental competition on 30 December 2025.
Applications and customers
Beyond the LNG chain, the group lists equipment applications in aerospace, data centre cooling, hydrogen energy, marine fuel systems, metals processing, nuclear, rail, cement and glass production, mine safety, pulp and paper, tunnel ventilation, wind tunnels, water treatment, carbon dioxide enrichment and waste-to-energy plants. Bulk carbon dioxide carbonation, nitrogen dosing and laser assist gas systems are sold as packaged products, and an educational site called Chart City describes how the equipment is used.
