The site carries a 2026 copyright.
Purpose and priorities
The institute describes its purpose as creating a better energy future by accelerating a just, secure and low-carbon energy transition, pursued through three strands: attracting and developing a diverse energy workforce; convening expertise and evidence to inform energy decisions; and enabling industry to make energy safer, more efficient and lower carbon. Its stated values are inclusiveness, trust built through open professional collaboration, and a commitment to making a difference.
Knowledge, data and publications
The EI's publishing and knowledge work is one of its most visible activities:
- Statistical Review of World Energy, the long-running annual data compendium, with a dedicated contact mailbox.
- Energy Barometer, its annual survey of energy professionals.
- New Energy World, a weekly digital magazine supported by a knowledge website and news centre.
- Generation 2050, a programme for younger professionals.
- Technical good-practice publications, plus the Toolbox incident-learning web app and specialist sites for Hearts and Minds, Tripod, G+ Global Offshore Wind Health and Safety Organisation, SafetyOn and the Wind Turbine Safety Rules.
Membership, training and accreditation
Membership is open to individuals and companies, with routes to professional registration and chartership, continuing professional development, accreditation services, the EI Connect mentoring scheme, volunteering and the Energy Institute Benevolent Fund. Training runs through the EI Academy, including an Executive Leadership in Energy Programme and the EnergyAware course, and the institute maintains registers of Energy Efficiency Experts and administers ESOS-related work. Its events calendar includes International Energy Week, the International Energy Awards, the President's Award and the Powering Net Zero series, and it convenes global communities plus a Young Professionals Network.
Governance and leadership
The EI is governed by a council headed by a president, currently Andy Brown OBE, deputy chair of the offshore wind developer Ørsted. Vice presidents include Tim Pick MBE, the UK's former Offshore Wind Champion, together with senior figures from bp, National Grid, KPMG and Equinor, and the honorary treasurer is drawn from Shell. Dr Fawaz K Bitar, formerly a senior vice president at bp and a past chairman of IOGP, becomes chief executive on 1 January 2027. The institute publishes its Royal Charter and byelaws, an annual report and accounts, a code of professional conduct, a complaints policy and a statement on compliance with competition law.
Environment, funding and contact
The EI pledged in May 2020 to end the climate impact of its own operations through the Pledge to Net Zero framework, set science-based targets covering its London office and staff travel to 2035, and signed the SME Climate Commitment in 2021; it has published six annual progress reports, including one for 2025, and has installed solar panels, LED lighting and a more efficient air handling unit at its premises. The organisation is not-for-profit, funded by fees from tens of thousands of individual members and hundreds of company members, plus publication sales and conference and training tickets, and it holds around £4 million of reserves in the Sarasin Endowment Fund. Departmental mailboxes cover membership, events, training, publications, the chief executive's office, professional registration, communications and the Statistical Review, and the site also lists job vacancies.
