Freepoint Commodities LLC is a commodities merchant headquartered at 58 Commerce Road in Stamford, Connecticut. The business was built from 2011, when it partnered with the private equity firm Stone Point Capital to create a physical commodity merchant platform. The company now reports more than 600 employees in over a dozen locations worldwide, and its partner has raised over USD 46 billion in aggregate capital commitments across more than 160 portfolio companies.
What Freepoint trades
The trading operation is organised by commodity and by geography, and manages physical assets as well as positions. Freepoint invests in and manages oil infrastructure and logistics, sourcing crude from large producers and smaller independents and moving barrels by truck, rail, barge, vessel and tankage; its refined products desk serves end users across the barrel. In natural gas the firm trades physical and financial volumes in North America and across the main European hubs in the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Italy, Austria and Spain, and it runs an LNG team covering sourcing, liquefaction, shipping and delivery for short and long-term requirements. Power trading covers the United States ISO markets and established European markets including Germany, the United Kingdom, Benelux, France, Austria, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland and Romania. Metals are handled by Freepoint Metals & Concentrates LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary that trades base metal concentrates as principal and arranges offtake and financing for miners. Agricultural trading supplies edible oils to China from North America, South America and Southeast Asia, and sources crop-based and waste-based renewable feedstocks for biofuels. The carbon desk trades European Union emissions allowances and hedges compliance obligations, while the Asia-Pacific team works on the Chinese national carbon trading scheme.
Finance, retail and transition assets
Merchant finance provides principal finance so that counterparties can develop, expand or refinance resource projects, and structures debt and equity across the capital structure where physical commodity assets are involved. The group also builds its own asset portfolio: Freepoint Solar originates and develops utility-scale solar projects of typically 20 to 50 MW in the north-eastern United States, with a 300 MW development pipeline spanning Delaware, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, while Freepoint Eco-Systems develops recycling plants that convert plastic waste into usable products. Retail supply is delivered through Freepoint Energy Solutions, the subsidiary that sells electricity and natural gas to business customers and offers efficiency and renewable products alongside conventional supply.
