GAIL (India) Limited is a state-controlled Indian gas company whose registered and corporate office is GAIL Bhawan, 16 Bhikaiji Cama Place, R K Puram, New Delhi 110066. It owns and operates the country's largest natural gas transmission system and also markets gas, sources LNG, extracts liquid hydrocarbons, produces polymers, and runs city gas distribution through subsidiaries and joint ventures. Its pipeline headquarters and National Gas Management Centre sit at GAIL Jubilee Tower in Noida, and a marketing and business development office operates from the World Trade Centre at Nauroji Nagar, New Delhi.
The transmission backbone
The company operates about 18,688 km of natural gas pipelines across India and states that it holds roughly 65% of the domestic gas transmission market. Alongside gas, it runs 2,040 km of LPG pipelines: the 1,427 km Jamnagar-Loni line linking western and northern India and the 610 km Vizag-Secunderabad line on the eastern coast. Capacity on the Jamnagar-Loni line is being raised from 3.25 to 6.5 MMTPA, and the Uran-Usar propane pipeline and the Vijaipur-Pata C2/C3 pipeline are under execution.
Gas marketing and LNG sourcing
Gas trading is the core business and GAIL describes a share of about 48% of India's natural gas marketing market. It supplies roughly two-thirds of the gas consumed by fertilizer producers and around 45% of the gas used by gas-based power plants. Its LNG sourcing portfolio stands at about 16.56 MMTPA, drawn from the United States, Qatar and Australia among others. Nine LNG vessels are in the shipping arrangement:
- GAIL Bhuwan, GAIL Sagar and GAIL Urja
- Grace Emilia, Maran Gas Pericles and Maran Gas Ulysses
- Energy Fidelity, Al Taweelah and Minerva Eloenora
Liquid hydrocarbons and polymers
GAIL runs four gas processing units, at Vijaipur (two units), Pata, Gandhar and Vaghodia, with combined LPG and liquid hydrocarbon capacity of 1,343 KTA. Petrochemical production is centred on the Pata complex, with 810 KTA of polymer capacity, supplemented by 280 KTA at its subsidiary Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Limited. Polypropylene capacity of 60 KTA is installed at Pata, with 500 KTA planned at Usar under the G-Pro brand, and purified terephthalic acid, branded G-Tex, is planned at its wholly owned subsidiary GAIL Mangalore Petrochemicals Limited.
City gas, renewables and biogas
City gas distribution is run through eight joint ventures and three subsidiaries, with six cities served directly. Group companies hold authorisations covering 72 geographical areas in 21 states and union territories, serving about 10.9 million piped natural gas customers through more than 3,430 CNG stations, over 9,250 industrial consumers and more than 23,050 commercial establishments. Renewable capacity totals 154 MW, made up of about 118 MW of wind and 36 MW of solar. A 10 MW PEM electrolyser at Vijaipur produces 4.3 tonnes per day of high-purity green hydrogen, and biogas is supplied in 128 geographical areas with a first 5 TPD compressed biogas plant commissioned at Ranchi. The company targets a 100% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2035 and a 35% cut in Scope 3 by 2040.
