Glencore plc is a diversified natural resource company headquartered at Baarermattstrasse 3 in Baar, Switzerland. Founded in the 1970s as a trading company, it now combines industrial production with marketing, operating in more than 30 countries with around 140,000 employees and contractors and handling over 60 commodities. Its customers are mainly industrial consumers in the automotive, steel, power generation, battery manufacturing and oil sectors, and it also provides financing and logistics services to producers and consumers of commodities.

Metals and minerals

Glencore describes itself as a major producer and marketer of copper, cobalt, nickel, zinc and lead, ferroalloys and other metals and minerals, supplying metals needed for electrification, batteries and manufacturing. The group's operations and associated companies span the Democratic Republic of Congo, where they include Mutanda Mining and Kamoto Copper Company; Kazakhstan through Kazzinc; Canada, with Raglan, Sudbury INO, the CCR refinery, CEZinc, the Horne smelter, Brenda Mines, Matagami and Elk Valley Resources; Australia, including Mount Isa Mines, McArthur River and the Murrin Murrin nickel-cobalt operation; Norway through Nikkelverk; Spain through Asturiana de Zinc; Italy through Portovesme; and Germany through Glencore Nordenham. In South America the group lists interests in Antamina, Collahuasi, Cerrejón and the El Pachón project, plus Glencore Chile and Glencore Peru. Glencore Technology and XPS supply processing technology and engineering services, and the recycling business recovers metals from secondary materials.

Energy: coal and oil

The energy division covers coal and oil. Coal is produced from a large Australian portfolio that includes Bulga, Liddell, Mangoola, the Mount Owen complex, Ravensworth, Ulan, the United Wambo joint venture, Wandoan and West Wallsend, and is marketed to steelmakers and power generators; oil is traded through the group's marketing business, which also offers the Trakk platform for counterparties. Astron Energy, the South African fuel business, is part of the same division.

Producer, marketer and recycler

The business combines industrial assets that mine, process, refine and recycle physical commodities with a marketing arm that moves them to customers worldwide, and the company reports industrial and marketing profitability separately so that the two earnings streams can be compared. The marketing business supplies both the group's own production and material bought from third-party suppliers, moving commodities by sea, rail and truck into warehouses, ships, storage, port facilities and processing plants before delivery. The traded book includes copper, cobalt, nickel, zinc and lead, ferroalloys, aluminium and alumina, iron ore, gold and silver, plus energy products such as thermal coal, crude oil, oil products and natural gas. Marketing also handles the group's recycling activity, which recovers copper, nickel, cobalt, zinc and precious metals from end-of-life electronics, lithium-ion batteries and other metal-bearing products. The recycling chain covers sourcing from equipment manufacturers and processors, sampling and valuation, refining and direct sale to industrial customers, and its facilities are in North America, South America and Europe.

Two long-established sites anchor that chain. The Horne smelter in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, founded in 1927, can process 840,000 tonnes a year of copper and precious-metal-bearing material, and the Canadian Copper Refinery in Montreal, in operation since 1931, converts anodes into 99.99 per cent copper cathodes and refines gold and silver into dore. Sampling plants in East Providence, Rhode Island, and San Jose, California, prepare electronic scrap for smelting, while Altonorte in northern Chile smelts copper concentrates and recycles high-grade copper scrap.
