Hartree Partners, LP is a merchant commodities firm headquartered at 1185 Avenue of the Americas in New York. The business dates back to 1997, when HETCO was formed as a joint venture with Hess Corporation, and it now describes itself as facilitating the flow of energy, metals, agriculture and environmental products across the commodity supply chain. Its own publications state that it is jointly owned by senior management and funds managed by Oaktree Capital Management, LP, and that it employs around 5,000 people worldwide.

Scale and structure

Hartree's website puts the firm at more than USD 4 billion in capitalisation, with 600 or more traders, marketers and analysts and 54 offices worldwide including affiliates, operating on every continent. Group numbers reported elsewhere by the firm are larger, counting more than 4,500 employees across Hartree and its affiliates. The European Commission's merger register describes Hartree Partners Holdings as jointly controlled by Oaktree Capital Group Holdings and Brookfield Corporation, the ownership structure behind the firm's recent acquisitions in soft commodities.

Trading, risk solutions and ventures

  • Trading: physical and financial positions across energy, metals, agricultural and environmental markets.
  • Environmental: compliance and voluntary carbon, renewable energy certificates and related products.
  • Assets: investments in infrastructure that support commodity flows.
  • Risk solutions: structured supply, hedging and optimisation services for customers.
  • Consulting: advisory work on energy and commodity strategy.

The firm's venture portfolio includes the environmental products business Vertree, the renewable developers AMPYR and AMPYR Solar Europe, and Hartree Solutions, which focuses on energy transition services. Hartree presents these ventures as vehicles for creating value across environmental, social and governance themes while keeping the trading business at the centre.

Expansion into agricultural commodities

Hartree moved into soft commodities from a base in energy. In July 2025 it acquired the core business units of ED&F Man Commodities, including the coffee trader Volcafe. In August 2025 it entered exclusive negotiations to buy Touton SAS, the Bordeaux-based green coffee and cocoa trader, a transaction reviewed by the European Commission under the EU Merger Regulation as case M.12189 and cleared in early 2026; the acquisition was announced as completed on 2 April 2026. Touton's most recent published sustainability report had described processing about 104,000 metric tonnes of coffee and 308,000 metric tonnes of cocoa a year.

Critical minerals and 2026 activity

Battery materials have become a second growth area. On 21 September 2026 Hartree announced an eight-year lithium carbonate agreement with Bridge Green Upcycle, an urban mining company recovering materials from end-of-life lithium-ion batteries, valued at an estimated USD 500 million to USD 1 billion at then-current market conditions and carrying exclusive marketing rights over about 10,000 metric tonnes a year, alongside an equity investment in Bridge Green's bridge financing round. The firm's head of battery and critical minerals, Landon Berns, described domestic supply of critical minerals as a pillar of its growth strategy. Hartree is also a named supplier to Project Vault, the proposed USD 12 billion public-private United States strategic critical minerals reserve announced in February 2026, and the Bridge Green agreement is presented as part of building that supply portfolio. The first lithium carbonate volumes under the agreement are projected for 2028.
