JERA Co., Inc. is a Japanese energy company headquartered on the 25th floor of the Nihonbashi Takashimaya Mitsui Building in Chuo-ku, Tokyo. It was established on 30 April 2015 as an equal joint venture between TEPCO Fuel and Power, Inc. and Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc., each holding 50 percent, with capital of 100 billion yen, and it employed 6,271 people as of 31 March 2026.
How the joint venture was assembled
JERA's corporate history page sets out the sequence by which the two parent groups combined their fuel and generation businesses. Tokyo Electric Power and Chubu Electric concluded a memorandum of understanding on a comprehensive alliance on 7 October 2014 and a joint venture agreement on 9 February 2015, covering the supply chain from upstream fuel investment and procurement through to power. JERA was established on 30 April 2015; it took over the parents' fuel transportation and trading businesses on 1 October 2015, their fuel and overseas power businesses including upstream assets and power purchase agreements on 1 July 2016, and their fuel receiving, storage, gas transmission and Japanese thermal generation businesses on 1 April 2019.
What the company does
- Fuel and LNG - procurement, shipping and trading of LNG, coal and other fuels, including upstream interests and long-term supply contracts.
- Thermal power generation in Japan - operation of the parents' former oil, gas and coal fired power stations through the East Japan and West Japan branches.
- Overseas power and renewables - generation investments abroad and renewable energy projects, developed through JERA's international teams.
- Engineering and consulting - operations and maintenance services, technical support and business development, organised partly through the JERA Global Institute and JERA Ventures.
The company states that its purpose is to provide internationally competitive energy to Japan while holding a strong position in international energy markets, and it has set out a zero CO2 emissions target for 2050 that relies on replacing fossil generation with renewables and low-carbon fuels, including ammonia and hydrogen co-firing at thermal stations.
