From Kellogg and Brown & Root to KBR
The business has two American roots. M.W. Kellogg was founded by Morris Woodruff Kellogg in New York in 1901 as a refining and pipe design specialist, set up one of the first petroleum laboratories in the United States in 1926 to license cracking technology and built the first commercial fluid catalytic cracking unit, commissioned in May 1942; 22 of the 34 such units built in the United States over the following two years were its work. Its Kellex subsidiary delivered the K-25 gaseous diffusion plant at Oak Ridge for the Manhattan Project, and it went on to ammonia, ethylene, helium and coal-to-liquids technologies, including five ammonia plant contracts in China in 1973. Brown & Root was founded in Texas in 1919 by Herman Brown and Daniel Root, built roads and then wartime naval facilities and ships, and installed one of the world's first offshore oil platforms in 1947. Halliburton bought Brown & Root in 1962 and, after acquiring Dresser Industries in 1998, merged Dresser's Kellogg with Brown & Root to form Kellogg Brown & Root. KBR was floated on the New York Stock Exchange in November 2006 at US$17 a share and separated from Halliburton in April 2007.
Growth has come largely through acquisition. KBR bought BE&K in 2008, Wyle and Honeywell Technology Solutions in 2016, Stinger Ghaffarian Technologies in 2018, Centauri in 2020, Frazer-Nash Consultancy in 2021 for a reported £293 million, VIMA Group in 2022 and LinQuest in 2024 for US$737 million, which made it one of the larger support contractors to the United States Space Force's Space Systems Command. In 2009 the company pleaded guilty in the United States to paying bribes to Nigerian officials between 1994 and 2004 over the Bonny Island liquefied natural gas terminal, and paid a US$402 million criminal fine with Halliburton plus a US$177 million disgorgement to the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Business segments and scale
The Sustainable Technology Solutions business licenses process technologies and provides advisory, engineering and project delivery for energy, chemicals, sustainable fuels and industrial customers. The Mission Technology Solutions business, known as Mission Technologies, serves governments in national security, space, intelligence, human performance and global operations, and works on NASA programmes and with allied space agencies. A digital accelerators unit sits alongside them. KBR states approximately 38,000 employees, customers in more than 80 countries and operations in more than 29 countries, and its classification on stock indices moved from engineering and construction to IT consulting and other services in April 2019, reflecting the weight of government services in revenue.
Technology and project delivery
Among the technologies KBR licenses are the KCap decarbonisation technology introduced with Hindustan Petroleum at the end of 2023 and the PureSAF route to sustainable aviation fuel. The company continues work on modifications to Woodside's Pluto Train 1 in Australia, supports NASA's Roman Space Telescope, and delivered piling works for the new Women's and Children's Hospital in Adelaide. Its Zero Harm safety platform underpins its sustainability policy, and its people programmes include the All In inclusion initiative and a technical fellows scheme, with sustainability and corporate responsibility reporting published on its website.
