Kinder Morgan, Inc. is one of North America's largest energy infrastructure companies, headquartered at 1001 Louisiana Street, Suite 1000, Houston, Texas, and listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker KMI. The company states that it owns an interest in or operates approximately 78,000 miles of pipelines and 136 terminals, with roughly 11,000 employees across North America. It was created in 1997 by Richard D. Kinder and William V. Morgan, who used the master limited partnership structure as a growth vehicle for the first time in the sector.
What the company operates
Kinder Morgan's business is organised into natural gas pipelines, products pipelines, terminals and CO2 operations, supported by treating, gas marketing and tariff services and an interactive electronic bulletin board for shippers. The natural gas network spans interstate and intrastate systems, gathering and processing, storage and Mexican and Canadian connections, and the company owns 37.5% of and operates the Natural Gas Pipeline Company of America system. Products pipelines move refined products, crude oil and condensate, including the SFPP, CALNEV, Central Florida, Plantation-linked and Hiland systems, while the terminals group handles liquids and bulk terminals along the Gulf Coast, the East Coast, the Midwest and the Pacific North-West. In CO2, Kinder Morgan transports and sells carbon dioxide for enhanced oil recovery and operates related oil production.
Corporate history
The company began in Houston in 1997 as Kinder Morgan Energy Partners with 175 employees and an enterprise value of about 350 million US dollars. It took its present shape through a series of transactions: the 1999 acquisition of KN Energy, the 2005 purchase of Canada's Terasen for about 5.6 billion dollars, a management buyout in 2006, a return to the New York Stock Exchange in 2011 in what the company describes as the largest private equity-backed initial public offering in US history, the roughly 38 billion dollar acquisition of El Paso Corporation in 2012, the Copano Energy purchase in 2013, and the 2014 buy-in of all publicly held units of Kinder Morgan Energy Partners, Kinder Morgan Management and El Paso Pipeline Partners in a transaction of about 76 billion dollars that left one listed company. The Canadian business was later sold off, with the Trans Mountain pipeline system transferred to the Government of Canada in 2018 and the remaining Canadian interests acquired by Pembina Pipeline Corporation in 2019.
Energy transition and recent expansion
Kinder Morgan formed its Energy Transition Ventures group in 2021 and entered the landfill renewable natural gas business through the acquisition of Kinetrex Energy, later expanding into renewable natural gas, carbon capture, utilisation and storage, liquefied natural gas production for the Midwest market and Midwest retail gas marketing. In December 2023 it completed the approximately 1.815 billion US dollar purchase of NextEra Energy Partners' South Texas midstream assets, and in February 2025 it closed the roughly 640 million US dollar acquisition of a natural gas gathering and processing system from Outrigger Energy II. The company issued its 2025 sustainability report in July 2026.
