Lynas Rare Earths Ltd is an Australian rare earths mining and processing company with its registered office at Level 4, 1 Howard Street, Perth, and a listing on the Australian Securities Exchange under the code LYC (ACN 009 066 648). It describes itself as the largest producer of separated rare earth materials outside China, running an integrated chain from a hard-rock mine in Western Australia to separation plants in Australia and Malaysia, and reports more than 1,000 employees and contractors across the two countries.
Mt Weld and the Western Australian chain
The Mt Weld deposit near Laverton in the Goldfields is the source of the company's ore and is mined and upgraded at an on-site concentration plant before concentrate is shipped for separation. A cracking and leaching plant at Kalgoorlie was added to bring part of the first-stage processing back to Australia, and the company has published a fact sheet and regular community updates on the project. Commissioning of the Mt Weld expansion was completed during the December 2025 half, adding capacity ahead of the ramp-up reported in 2026.
Malaysian separation plant
The Lynas Malaysia subsidiary, registered as Lynas Malaysia Sdn Bhd (200601032530 (752289-D)), operates a 100-hectare advanced materials plant at Gebeng near Kuantan in Pahang, described by the company as the world's largest single rare earths processing facility. The plant separates concentrate into individual rare earth products for export to manufacturing markets in Asia, Europe and the United States, and recorded its first half-year of heavy rare earth production during the 2026 financial year. Lynas publishes Malaysian monitoring data, and the site has been operating for over a decade, a milestone the company highlighted on its website.
Products and offtake arrangements
Lynas supplies rare earth materials whose main use is in permanent magnets and other high-technology applications:
- Neodymium and praseodymium (NdPr) for magnets used in electric vehicles, wind turbines and electronics.
- Lanthanum and cerium, used in catalysts, polishing and other industrial applications.
- Mixed heavy rare earths (SEG), which entered customer supply in the 2026 financial year, with first contracts signed for separated heavy rare earth oxides.
Supply agreements reported by the company include a long-term arrangement with Japan Australia Rare Earths B.V. (JARE) covering rare earth supply to Japanese industry to 2038, and an agreement with the United States Government for supply to US industry. The company also maintains a dedicated US markets page.
Results and the Towards 2030 strategy
Lynas reports on a financial year ending 30 June. Half-year results were published on 26 February 2026 and full-year results for the year to 30 June 2026 on 26 August 2026. In its half-year commentary the company reported completing commissioning of the Mt Weld expansion, delivering the first half-year of heavy rare earth production in Malaysia, launching a growth plan called Towards 2030 and completing an equity raising to fund that agenda. It also noted that the average China domestic NdPr price, excluding VAT, rose from US$55.0 per kilogram in June 2025 to US$100.8 per kilogram in June 2026. Trading updates during 2026 pointed to higher ore volumes and NdPr prices as the Mt Weld expansion ramped up.
Sustainability, community and reporting
The company states that its operations are certified to ISO standards for environmental management and publishes standalone sustainability reports with its annual report; the 2025 editions of both were released ahead of the 2025 annual general meeting. Residue and tailings management, monitoring and governance, and community programmes — including the Lynas Local Giving Program and Goldfields community updates — are documented on the website, alongside quarterly activities reports and ASX announcements.
