NextEra Energy, Inc. is a United States electric power company listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker NEE and headquartered in Juno Beach, Florida. It owns Florida Power and Light Company, a regulated electric utility, and NextEra Energy Resources, which develops and operates wind, solar and battery storage generation for wholesale markets and large corporate customers.
Two businesses under one group
- Florida Power and Light describes itself as the largest electric utility in the United States, serving more than 6 million customer accounts, or approximately 12 million people, from a generation mix of nuclear, natural gas, solar and battery storage.
- NextEra Energy Resources develops, owns and operates generation and storage across the United States and describes its portfolio as one of the largest and most diverse in North America.
FPL reported in August 2026 that 120 solar energy centres were in service, with about 8,826 megawatts of capacity spread over 30 Florida counties and 12 centres added during 2026.
Solar, reliability and storm hardening at FPL
FPL states that its solar investments have avoided more than 1.3 billion US dollars in fuel costs for customers to date and that its solar centres contributed almost 40 million dollars in local property taxes in 2025. The utility reports reliability performance more than 60 percent better than the national average, a typical residential bill about 30 percent below that average, and it has taken the ReliabilityOne National Reliability Award in eight of the last eleven years.
Hurricane preparation is a standing programme. About 97 percent of the transmission structures serving FPL customers are steel or concrete, roughly 2,000 miles of neighbourhood power lines have been placed underground through the Storm Secure Underground Program, and smart grid devices avoided approximately 824,000 customer outages during the three hurricanes that made landfall in Florida in 2024. Vegetation around power lines is managed with LiDAR imagery, and the company runs an annual week-long storm drill. In 2026 it opened an online customer assistance centre and launched Saving Steps, a programme that offers eligible households a one-time 200 dollar bill credit.
NextEra Energy Resources and large-load customers
NextEra Energy Resources contracted about 2.5 gigawatts of new capacity with Meta Platforms, announced on 8 December 2025, made up of eleven power purchase agreements and two energy storage agreements. Nine solar projects account for 2.1 gigawatts across the ERCOT, SPP and MISO markets, while four projects in Valencia and De Baca counties, New Mexico provide 190 megawatts of solar and 168 megawatts of battery storage for the Public Service Company of New Mexico system. The 13 projects are scheduled to come online between 2026 and 2028, with up to 2,440 construction jobs reported, and in the same month the developer announced a collaboration with Basin Electric Power Cooperative on the River Run Energy Center in North Dakota.
The company refers to a pipeline of more than 130 gigawatts of large-load opportunities, most of it tied to data centre and industrial demand. Its transmission affiliate GridLiance West broke ground in September 2026 on an upgrade project in Nevada that is expected to create approximately 500 construction jobs.
Financial performance
NextEra Energy reported adjusted earnings of 2.407 billion US dollars, or 1.15 dollars per share, for the second quarter of 2026, against 2.164 billion dollars, or 1.05 dollars per share, a year earlier, and said adjusted earnings per share for the first half were 9.8 percent higher year on year. The second-quarter results were published on 24 July 2026.
