RWE Aktiengesellschaft is a German energy group based at RWE Platz 1 in Essen and listed on the Frankfurt stock exchange as a DAX constituent. After more than 125 years in the electricity business it has repositioned itself around renewables, flexible generation and battery storage, with roughly 20,000 employees worldwide and a stated goal of carbon neutrality by 2040.
Portfolio and reporting segments
Across renewables, flexible generation and battery storage the group now operates almost 41 gigawatts of capacity. Its activities are reported in four segments, whose first half 2026 adjusted EBITDA figures show where the earnings come from:
- Offshore Wind - 810 million euros, up from 643 million euros a year earlier, helped by more normal wind conditions.
- Onshore Wind and Solar - 1,016 million euros, against 830 million euros, on capacity growth and better European wind, partly offset by dollar weakness.
- Flexible Generation - 1,025 million euros, against 606 million euros, including a 332 million euro compensation payment from the Dutch state for the statutory restriction on coal-fired generation at the Eemshaven plant in 2022, plus higher UK capacity market revenues.
- Supply and Trading - 134 million euros, above the 16 million euros of the prior-year period, after trading performance recovered in the second quarter.
Investment programme and construction pipeline
RWE commissioned 752 megawatts of new generation capacity in the first half of 2026 and has expanded its generation portfolio by 2.6 gigawatts since the end of June 2025. A further 10.3 gigawatts is under construction. Net investment in the first six months of 2026 reached 6.3 billion euros, and after taking the Amprion transaction into account the group raised its plan for the full year to between 9 and 11 billion euros, from 6 to 8 billion euros. Total net investment through to 2031 is put at 42 billion euros. Net debt stood at 15.0 billion euros at 30 June 2026. The group operates through subsidiaries including RWE Offshore Wind, RWE Renewables Europe and Australia, RWE Americas, RWE Generation SE, RWE Power AG and RWE Supply and Trading.
Grids: the Amprion stake
At the end of July 2026 RWE announced an increase in its shareholding in Amprion to a majority position, making the German transmission system operator a key pillar of the group alongside generation and trading. Chief executive Markus Krebber described the move as expanding RWE's presence in another attractive growth area and pointed to the combination of renewables, flexible generation, storage, trading and grid infrastructure as the group's response to growing electricity demand.
Financial results and shareholder returns
In results published on 13 August 2026, RWE reported first half adjusted EBITDA of 3.0 billion euros, up from 2.1 billion euros, adjusted net income of 1.3 billion euros against 0.8 billion euros, and adjusted earnings per share of 1.77 euros against 1.08 euros. Guidance for the full year 2026 was raised to adjusted EBITDA of between 5,750 and 6,350 million euros and adjusted net income of between 1,950 and 2,450 million euros. The company targets average annual growth in adjusted earnings per share of about 10 percent through to 2031, reaching 4.55 euros per share that year, and confirmed a dividend of 1.32 euros per share for 2026 with expected annual increases of 10 percent out to 2031.
