Platinum group metals and gold at the core

The group is one of the largest producers and refiners of platinum group metals and a top-tier gold producer. In 2025 it produced 1.2 million ounces of platinum, 1 million ounces of palladium, 189,000 ounces of rhodium, 258,000 ounces of ruthenium and 60,000 ounces of iridium, alongside 856,000 ounces of gold and 2.3 million ounces of silver. Platinum group metal output from the South African operations totalled 1.7 million ounces on a 4E basis; US operations mined 284,000 ounces on a 2E basis, and US recycling contributed 378,000 ounces of platinum, palladium and rhodium.

The South African PGM business is built around the Rustenburg and Marikana complexes plus a stake in Mimosa, while the South African gold business covers Beatrix, Driefontein, Kloof, Burnstone, Cooke, a share in DRDGOLD and an interest in Rand Refinery. In the United States the group operates the Stillwater and East Boulder mines in Montana.

Battery metals, secondary mining and recycling

Beyond precious metals, Sibanye-Stillwater has moved into commodities linked to the energy transition and the circular economy:

  • Lithium — the Keliber project in Finland, which moved into commissioning during 2026.
  • Nickel — the Sandouville refinery in France, classed as a non-mineral property.
  • Zinc and copper — the Century operation in Queensland and the Mt Lyell project in Tasmania, Australia.
  • Chrome, cobalt and other by-products, with 2.3 million tonnes of chrome and 101,000 tonnes of payable zinc produced in 2025.
  • Recycling and secondary mining — processing of autocatalysts, electronic scrap and other precious-metal-bearing material across sites in the United States and Europe, including the Reldan and Metallix businesses.

Financial performance and strategy

For the year ended 31 December 2025 the group reported a reduced net loss of R4.7 billion (US$264 million), narrower than the R5.7 billion loss of 2024, and normalised earnings of R10.6 billion (US$577 million) against a normalised loss of R1.5 billion the year before. FTSE Russell put its green revenue factor at 74 per cent, a measure of revenue from products with environmental utility. The 2025 annual report suite was published during 2026, and the annual general meeting for that financial year was held on 28 May 2026 by electronic communication.

A refreshed strategy presented in 2026 rests on four pillars — simplification of the operating model and asset portfolio, performance excellence, growth anchored in returns, and a disciplined capital allocation framework. Interim results for the six months to 30 June 2026 were released on 1 September 2026 together with a results booklet, presentation, webcast and conference call, following a first-quarter operating update on 6 May 2026. The JSE share last traded at 4,316 cents on 26 September 2026.

Safety, environment and workforce

The 2025 reporting year produced the group's lowest serious injury frequency rate and total recordable injury frequency rate on record. On the environmental side, Sibanye-Stillwater reports full conformance with the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management at all active tailings facilities, a year-on-year fall of 8.6 per cent in scope 2 emissions, 5,303 hectares of land restored to date, and a renewable energy portfolio of 765MW that includes the Castle wind farm and Springbok solar farm.
