How the company was assembled
SK Energy was created in 2007 when SK Corporation, then South Korea's leading refiner, was divided into an operating energy company and a holding company. The present SK Innovation dates from 2011, when SK Energy renamed itself and spun off its refining, lubricants and chemicals businesses into new subsidiaries. SK Incheon Petrochem and the oil trading arm followed in 2013, the battery materials business became SK IE Technology in 2019, and on 1 October 2021 the battery and exploration units were separated as SK On and SK Earthon. SK Inc. holds 34.45% of SK Innovation and the National Pension Service 7.14%.
Refining, chemicals and a changing battery business
The industrial core of the group is the refining and petrochemical complex at Ulsan on South Korea's south-east coast, which the company's own editorial content describes as the heart of Korean industry, complemented by the Incheon petrochemical site. On the battery side, SK On announced in 2026 a 9 gigawatt-hour LFP cell supply agreement with NeoVolta Power and an expansion of its energy storage business, while the earlier US joint venture with Ford was wound up, a decision reported in December 2025. SK Innovation publishes quarterly earnings releases for 2026 and maintains an integrated ESG framework with a 2025 integrated report and sustainability reporting.
