Topsoe is a Danish chemical technology and catalyst company registered as Topsoe A/S with CVR number 41853816. Its headquarters and main research site are at Haldor Topsøes Allé 1 in Kongens Lyngby, north of Copenhagen, with additional Danish addresses at Frederikssund and a production plant in Herning. The company sells process technologies, catalysts and related services into refineries, chemical plants, fertilizer production, shipping fuel and power-to-x projects, and is led by chief executive Elena Scaltritti, who is quoted in its 2026 half-year announcement.
Catalysts, licensed technologies and services
Topsoe's commercial model rests on three legs: technology licensing, catalyst supply and aftermarket services. Its output list covers ammonia, hydrogen, methanol, sustainable aviation fuel, renewable fuels, emission control, syngas, renewable natural gas and e-NG, sulfuric acid and battery materials. The catalyst business is the long-established core, going back to the company's first small catalyst workshop, while the technology side designs complete plants and provides front-end engineering. Topsoe Academy packages the company's accumulated process knowledge into training courses for plant operators and engineers.
Half-year 2026 results and a costly restructuring
In its company announcement 11/2026 of 27 August 2026 Topsoe reported first-half 2026 revenue of DKK 3,412 million, down from DKK 3,679 million a year earlier, while EBIT before special items rose to DKK 185 million from DKK 152 million. Revenue from technologies and solutions for low-carbon fuels, renewable fuels and e-fuels accounted for 22% of the total, equivalent to DKK 748 million. The Technology business performed strongly, whereas the Catalyst business suffered from the conflict in the Middle East, which postponed orders and raised delivery costs in the region. A revised strategic pathway for solid oxide electrolyser cell technology, together with a restructuring carried out in May 2026, produced one-off special items of DKK 3,779 million; the company now expects the total restructuring charge, including impairments of power-to-x assets, to reach DKK 4,100-4,400 million, mostly non-cash. Full-year 2026 revenue guidance was raised to DKK 8,000-8,500 million with an EBIT margin before special items of 7.0-10.0%.
Power-to-x and e-methanol engineering
The clearest new project evidence of 2026 is a contract signed with the energy company Uniper on 31 August 2026. Topsoe will deliver front-end engineering and design for Uniper's NorthStarH2 e-methanol project in Östersund in northern Sweden, using its ModuLite e-methanol technology, which is built as prefabricated modules and includes gas compression. The plant is expected to produce around 115,000 tonnes of e-methanol a year once operating, with a final investment decision anticipated in 2028, and the product is aimed at decarbonising shipping and other energy-intensive users. Chief commercial officer Yassir Ghiyati framed the Nordic region as one of Europe's more ambitious clean-fuel markets. Power-to-x work also underpins the company's electrolyser and e-ammonia offering, the segment whose strategic revision triggered the 2026 writedowns.
Eighty years of ammonia and syngas chemistry
Haldor Topsøe, born on 24 May 1913, studied physics and chemistry in Copenhagen and founded the company on 10 April 1940, the day after Denmark was occupied, after plans to take a research post with DuPont in the United States fell through. The early business was consulting engineering; a first small catalyst production facility followed in 1943 in a Copenhagen courtyard. Fertilizer demand after the war made ammonia synthesis the company's growth engine, and by 1953 it held 30% of the global ammonia catalyst market outside the Soviet Union and China. In 1958 Topsøe bought the Linderupgaard property at Frederikssund and began building his first catalyst factory there in May 1959. The company has since expanded into sulphur removal, emission control, methanol and renewable fuel technology, and it marked 2020s priorities under a sustainability heading. Its founder died in 2013.
