Tüpraş, formally Türkiye Petrol Rafinerileri A.Ş., is Turkey's principal oil refiner and describes itself as the country's largest industrial enterprise. The company is part of the Koç Group, is listed on Borsa Istanbul under the ticker TUPRS, and is headquartered at Gülbahar Mahallesi, Büyükdere Caddesi No: 101/A in Şişli, Istanbul. Its four refineries give it the capacity to process roughly 30 million tonnes of crude a year, and the company says it holds 57% of Turkey's petroleum products storage capacity.

Four refineries

  • İzmit in Kocaeli, commissioned in 1961, about 11 million tonnes a year, the most complex plant in the group with a Nelson complexity index of 14.5 and the largest storage capacity at 3.03 million tonnes.
  • İzmir at Aliağa, commissioned in 1972, about 11 million tonnes a year with a complexity index of 7.66 and marine access for imported crude; sustainable aviation fuel for the Turkish Airlines agreement is produced here.
  • Kırıkkale in central Anatolia, commissioned in 1986, about 5 million tonnes a year, fed by crude landed at Ceyhan and piped inland.
  • Batman in the south-east, commissioned in 1955, about 1.1 million tonnes a year, processing domestic crude from small local fields.

The refineries supply fuels, LPG, base oils, waxes, bitumen, aviation fuels and petrochemical feedstocks to the Turkish market.

Ownership and affiliates

Tüpraş's origins lie with İPRAŞ, a refinery company established by the American Caltex group, and in 1983 it and three other state-owned refineries were combined under the Tüpraş umbrella. Partial privatisation began with an initial public offering of 2.5% of shares in 1991, and by 2005 a consortium of Koç Holding and Shell had bid more than 4 billion US dollars for the remaining 51% through the vehicle Enerji Yatırımları. The company's operations are supported by affiliates in shipping and rail logistics, its 79.98% stake in the shipping company DİTAŞ, a 40% shareholding in the fuel retailer Opet, the electricity business Entek and the rail operator Körfez Ulaştırma, and it has a trading arm, Tüpraş Trading UK, in London.

Transformation to 2050

Tüpraş's Strategic Transformation Plan sets a target of carbon neutrality by 2050 and is built on four pillars: sustainable refining, biofuels, zero-carbon electricity and green hydrogen. In June 2026 the company announced the SUNFUSION research project under the European Commission's Horizon Europe programme, which will use hydrothermal liquefaction to make biofuels from micro-organisms such as microalgae and oleaginous yeasts. In June 2025 it signed a letter of intent with Turkish Airlines to supply sustainable aviation fuel, the airline's first domestic procurement agreement of its kind. Tüpraş Ventures, the group's venture capital arm, invests in energy transition start-ups including green hydrogen developers, and the company runs Industry 4.0 and digitalisation programmes across its plants.

Reporting and financing

The company published its first integrated annual report in March 2024 and in March 2025 became the first company in its sector to publish a report fully compliant with the Turkish sustainability reporting standards. On 15 May 2025 it secured a 500 million US dollar five-year sustainability-linked club loan from seven international banks. Its own summaries place it as the seventh largest refinery company in Europe, the thirtieth largest in the world and the leading company in Turkey's top 500 industrial enterprises. Reported revenue for 2022 was 29.91 billion US dollars.
