Lloyd's Register, which trades as LR, is a classification and compliance organisation headquartered in London. It was founded in 1760 and states that it has operated for more than 260 years. LR classes ships and offshore units for marine and offshore clients, verifies materials, equipment and systems, and sells advisory, training, digital and port services alongside its core surveying work.
Classification and statutory work
Classification and certification remains the group's main business: it approves designs, surveys newbuildings and existing tonnage, and supports owners through construction, operation, life extension and decommissioning. Statutory services cover the regulatory compliance that flag states require, and the group maintains technical rules and guidance for specific asset types, including common structural rules for bulk carriers and oil tankers and guidance notes on the life extension of floating offshore installations at a fixed location. Project certification for offshore wind farms is offered as a separate service line. Clients use a portal with a digital workbench that handles in-service plan approval, new construction submissions, pre-board documentation and machinery, equipment and components approvals, and electronic certificates can be validated online.
Services beyond classification
Around the classification core the group has built a services business covering advisory, port services, ship retrofits, ship emergency response and digital solutions, together with a maritime training catalogue. Course areas published by LR include maritime management systems such as ISM, ISPS and ILO MLC 2006 internal auditing and company and ship security officer training, port facility security officer courses, crisis management and media response, essential dry docking, superintendent training and leadership programmes for fleets, ships and shore-based teams, plus fuel management training linked to its fuel testing laboratory work.
Offshore energy and floating gas
Offshore oil and gas, offshore renewables and carbon capture and storage are handled as energy markets alongside shipping. In August 2026 LR was providing classification and technical assurance for the conversion of the LNG carrier LNG Bayelsa into a floating storage unit, temporarily named FSU LNG Cap Lopez, for Dixstone Lower Gulf FZCO, a sister company of Perenco; the work is being carried out at Drydocks World in Dubai and covers steel renewals, new piping, a boil-off gas module and wider life-extension measures before the unit stores LNG for an offshore project in Gabon. LR also appointed Wouter Pattynama, previously of Australia's offshore regulator NOPSEMA, as executive client solutions manager for offshore in Perth on 10 August 2026, covering Australia, New Zealand and Asia-Pacific. Floating wind work has included guidance with Flowra in 2026, approval of the SnapWind float design in 2025 and recommended practices for floating turbine support structures in 2024. The group's former oil and gas consultancy arm was sold to Inspirit Capital in 2020 and now trades separately as Vysus Group, leaving LR focused on assurance and classification.
Research, fuels and approvals
LR publishes research reports and technical approvals as part of its commercial work. Its 2025 reports covered energy-saving device retrofits using advanced propeller designs, maritime autonomous surface ships and alarm management. Approvals and studies announced in 2026 include a design appraisal for a 35,000 cubic metre liquefied CO2 carrier for HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and HD Korea Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering, a study of 200,000 cubic metre LNG carriers as a next step in fleet renewal, a 150,000 cubic metre ultra-large ethane carrier project using GTT's latest containment system, an emissions monitoring verification for Daphne Technology, a design appraisal for a fore-accommodation LNG carrier fitted with Mitsui O.S.K. Lines' Wind Challenger sail, a certification framework for liquid hydrogen shipping with Pusan National University, certification of a hydrogen fuel cell retrofit for the vessel Prince Madog, and an August 2026 report on the potential and limits of hydrogen as a marine fuel.
Foundation, digital arm and governance
Lloyd's Register Foundation was established in 2012 as an independent global charity that shares LR's safety mission and works with the group on initiatives such as the Maritime Decarbonisation Hub, an independent research unit formed in 2020 with a Foundation grant and staffed by specialists in economics, fuels, risk and safety engineering, human factors and analytics. The group also owns OneOcean, formed by integrating LR OneOcean with Ocean Technologies Group after acquisitions in 2022 and 2024; its digital products are used on more than 30,000 vessels and support training for over a million seafarers. On 9 June 2026 LR Group and the Foundation announced Matthias Altendorf as chair from the end of Thomas Thune Andersen's tenure in June 2027. General technical enquiries are handled through the global technical client care mailbox, complaints through a separate feedback address, and office and port finders help owners locate surveyors by location.
