Alfa Laval AB (publ) is a Swedish industrial group whose equipment transfers heat, separates liquids from solids and gases, and moves fluids in refineries, petrochemical plants, offshore installations, ships, power stations and process plants. The head office sits in Lund, where the company is registered as 556587-8054 and can be reached on +46 46 36 65 00. It employs more than 23,500 people, serves customers in over 100 countries and reported annual sales of SEK 69.6 billion, about EUR 6.6 billion, for 2025. The shares are listed on Nasdaq Stockholm and the business is organised in three divisions: Energy, Food & Pharma, and Ocean.
From a milk separator to refinery heat exchangers
Gustaf de Laval and Oskar Lamm patented a centrifugal milk separator in 1878 and founded AB Separator in 1883; pumps followed in 1888 and the first separator sold for oil purification left the works in 1916. The company's first heat exchanger dates from 1938, the spiral heat exchanger entered the portfolio with the acquisition of AB Rosenblad's patents in 1962, and the business took its current name, Alfa-Laval AB, in 1963. Tetra Pak and the Rausing family acquired the group in 1991, the investment company Industri Kapital bought it in 2000, and it returned to the Stockholm exchange in 2002. Later additions include Packinox, a French maker of welded plate heat exchangers for oil, gas and refining service, bought in 2005; the air heat exchanger suppliers Helpman and Fincoil in 2007; Aalborg Industries in 2011 and Frank Mohn in 2013, both strengthening marine and offshore pumping; StormGeo in weather intelligence in 2021; Desmet in edible oils and biofuels in 2022; a dedicated electrolyser and fuel cell business unit formed in 2023; and the cryogenic business acquired from Fives in 2025. The group states that it holds more than 4,200 patents, files 40 to 60 new ones a year and owns over 2,000 registered trademarks.
Equipment for hydrocarbon and marine fuel service
The product range is built on plate-and-frame, brazed and welded plate heat exchangers, spiral and air heat exchangers, disc-stack separators, decanter centrifuges, filters, strainers and membranes, plus pumps, valves and tank cleaning equipment. Brazed units are marketed as AlfaNova under the AlfaFusion bonding method introduced in 2003, while Packinox welded exchangers are aimed at refinery and gas processing duties. The Energy Division sells to oil and gas extraction, refining, petrochemicals, power generation and data centres; the Ocean Division serves shipowners, shipyards, engine builders and companies involved in offshore oil and gas exploration, and its portfolio includes fuel supply systems for LNG and LPG, exhaust gas steam boilers, once-through steam generators for thermal energy storage and PureBallast ballast water treatment.
Carbon capture, hydrogen and marine work in 2026
On 14 September 2026 Alfa Laval said Saipem, as EPC contractor, had selected it to supply heat transfer equipment for Stockholm Exergi's bioenergy carbon capture project in Stockholm, a facility due to start operating in 2028 and designed to capture and permanently store up to 800,000 tonnes of biogenic carbon dioxide a year. The scope covers Ziepack gas-gas interchangers and process plate-and-frame exchangers used to recover heat back into the district heating network. On 2 September 2026 the company was named technology provider for electrolyser cooling at the Onuba H2 plant that Moeve is building at the La Rabida energy park in Huelva, Spain, where an initial 300 MW of electrolysis capacity with an option for a further 105 MW is planned to produce 45,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen a year; Alfa Laval's scope is 60 heat exchangers covering balance-of-plant, electrolyser and gas cooling. A skid-mounted version of the PureBallast 3 Ultra treatment system followed on 3 September 2026, and on 11 September 2026 the company signed a memorandum of understanding with PT Sumaraja Indah covering lifecycle support for heat exchanger installations in the H203 and JK7 data centre projects in Indonesia.
Interim results for 2026
The interim report for 1 April to 30 June 2026, published on 21 July 2026, recorded order intake of SEK 22,235 million against SEK 16,444 million a year earlier, an increase of 35 percent of which 29 percent was organic, and net sales of SEK 18,117 million against SEK 16,819 million. Adjusted EBITA was SEK 3,071 million, a margin of 17.0 percent against 17.8 percent, earnings per share were SEK 4.91 and cash flow from operating activities was SEK 2,413 million. For the first six months order intake reached SEK 39,847 million, net sales SEK 34,036 million and adjusted EBITA SEK 5,958 million at a 17.5 percent margin, with return on capital employed of 21.7 percent and a net debt to EBITDA ratio of 1.11. The company guided that demand in the third quarter would be somewhat lower than in the second and scheduled a capital markets day for 18 November 2026.
Service network, sites and contact
Alfa Laval supports installed equipment through more than 800 field service engineers, over 100 service centres worldwide and upward of 20,000 cases handled a year, covering commissioning, maintenance, upgrades and end-of-life replacement.
