Axens is a French technology and catalyst group with its head office at Rueil-Malmaison, west of Paris, and operations grouped into Africa, the Americas, Asia-Pacific, Europe and the Middle East. The company licences process units, manufactures catalysts and adsorbents, builds furnaces, modular units and other equipment, and provides engineering services from feasibility study through start-up and later revamps. Its chief executive and chairman of the board is Quentin Debuisschert, who took the CEO role in February 2024.

Scale of the licensing and catalyst business

The group states that more than 3,000 industrial units operate under its licences and that it produces over 75,000 tonnes of catalysts and adsorbents a year, employing more than 2,200 people worldwide. Its stated scope covers converting oil and biomass into cleaner fuels, producing and purifying major petrochemical intermediates, chemical recycling of plastics, natural gas treatment and conversion, water treatment and carbon capture and storage. Commercial activity is marketed under three brands: Axens Solutions, Heurtey Petrochem Solutions and Axens Horizon. Selling points include digital services and applications, energy efficiency studies, technical support and performance management, customer training and unit retrofits.

Project awards recorded in 2026

The company's news file for the second half of 2026 shows a steady flow of licensing and engineering work. On 9 September 2026 it reported that S-Oil's liquid phase xylene isomerization project had reached final investment decision, with start-up scheduled for the second quarter of 2027 at the S-Oil Aromatics Complex #1; the licence agreement had been signed in late 2024. On 2 September 2026 Axens was awarded a 5,000 cubic metre per day low-sulphur diesel hydrotreater at YPF's industrial complex in Argentina, using its Prime-D technology in a modular configuration. On 31 August 2026 Expander Energy of Canada selected Axens' Fischer-Tropsch liquids upgrading technology for second-generation sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel. A memorandum of understanding signed with Wison Engineering on 7 September 2026 covers collaboration on global SAF and eSAF projects, including the Fischer-Tropsch route.

Electrifying process heat

One of the more distinctive 2026 references concerns the replacement of fuel-fired process heat. On 7 September 2026 Axens said it had worked with Shell and Schneider Electric to install an industrial-scale electric tubular heater at the R3 base oil project under construction at the Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Rheinland in Germany. The partners present the installation as a step towards electrifying energy-intensive industrial processes, and Axens lists electric tubular heaters alongside its conventional furnaces and waste heat recovery equipment. The same technology portfolio supports its work on plastic chemical recycling and on carbon capture, areas where the group positions itself as an integrator of licensed process steps rather than a single-product supplier.

Research heritage and governance

Axens' management team has close historical ties to IFPEN, the French public energy research organisation, whose headquarters are also in Rueil-Malmaison. Executive vice president Fabrice Bertoncini spent his career at IFPEN from 2001 before leading the group's US affiliate HTI, LLC in Lawrenceville, and Eric Caprani serves as executive vice president for industrial operations. The group publishes a set of policies covering environment, safety, purchasing, data privacy and supplier conduct, together with an integrity code and an ethics hotline. Its head office photograph on the careers pages confirms the Rueil site as the corporate base, and the group maintains a LinkedIn presence as its main social channel.

Contact and presence

Axens does not publish a general enquiry e-mail address on its website. The contact page offers a form with fields for name, e-mail address, subject and message, and the site organises addresses by region rather than by function. The legal notice names [email protected] for questions about the group's trademarks. Country and area pages list local offices across the five regions, including the French headquarters, and the group distributes a corporate brochure covering its business lines from its company page.
