Full-year 2026 results

BHP published its results for the year ended 30 June 2026 on 18 August 2026, alongside its annual report and results presentation. Attributable profit came in at USD 9.8 billion, 9% higher than the USD 9.0 billion reported for the previous year, while underlying attributable profit exceeded USD 13 billion, up 30%. Net operating cashflow rose 17% to USD 21.8 billion, and the group ended the year with net debt of USD 8.7 billion against USD 12.9 billion a year earlier, a net debt to underlying EBITDA ratio of 0.3 times and below the company's target range of USD 10 billion to USD 20 billion. The year also brought USD 4.3 billion of silver streaming proceeds, and in August 2026 Global Infrastructure Partners paid USD 2.0 billion relating to BHP's share of Western Australia Iron Ore's inland power consumption.

Copper becomes the largest earner

For the first time copper contributed more than half of group underlying EBITDA, generating a record of over USD 18 billion, equal to 54% of the total, at a 70% underlying EBITDA margin, with USD 6.9 billion of free cash flow. BHP produced roughly 2 million tonnes of copper for the second consecutive year and describes itself as the world's largest copper producer. The company has approved USD 0.5 billion of pre-commitment funding for a new concentrator at Escondida in Chile, ahead of a final investment decision expected in calendar 2027 or 2028, and reports a project pipeline across Chile, Australia and Argentina that could lift copper output by about 40% by FY2035. Growth options include the Resolution project in Arizona, Vicuña on the Argentina-Chile border, an investment in Faraday Copper and a memorandum of understanding with Sierra Gorda SCM. Escondida cut unit costs by 10% and Copper SA reduced them by 73%.

Iron ore, coal and potash

Iron ore generated more than USD 14 billion of underlying EBITDA at a 61% margin, and Western Australia Iron Ore set records for both production and shipments while holding its unit cost position for a seventh consecutive year. BHP announced plans for Ministers North, a new Pilbara mine intended to keep WAIO production above 305 million tonnes a year. Stage 1 of the Jansen potash project in Canada was 84% complete at the reporting date and remains on track for first production in mid-calendar 2027; the company expects the mine to operate for more than 60 years. On the demand side, BHP points to copper consumption rising from around 34 million tonnes a year today to more than 50 million tonnes by 2050, and to China continuing to produce roughly 1 billion tonnes of steel a year this decade.

Safety and social performance

The results statement records the death of a coworker at BMA's Peak Downs mine in July 2026, with investigations under way, and restates the elimination of fatalities as the group's highest priority. BHP reports that its operational emissions are down about a third since FY2020 and that it remains on track for its FY2030 target. It also states that it spent a record amount with Indigenous businesses in FY2026 and that it has achieved gender balance across its workforce, which the company presents as unique among large listed miners.
