How it works
Choose a horizontal or a vertical cylinder and enter the diameter, the length (or height) and the liquid level. A vertical tank is linear in level; a horizontal one uses the circular-segment area: V = L · [R² · acos((R−h)/R) − (R−h) · √(2Rh − h²)].
Formula
Vₕ = L · [R² · acos((R−h)/R) − (R−h) · √(2Rh − h²)] · Vᵥ = π R² h
Assumptions and limits
The tank is a plain cylinder with flat ends: dished or conical heads, internals, nozzles and sediment are not included. Level is measured from the bottom of the shell, and a horizontal tank's level cannot exceed its diameter.
