How it works
Choose which value you know — °API, specific gravity or density — and enter it. The tool gives the other two and the number of barrels in one metric tonne. °API = 141.5 / SG − 131.5, and a °API of 10 equals water.
Formula
SG = 141.5 / (°API + 131.5) · ρ = SG × 999.016 kg/m³ (T = 60 °F)
Assumptions and limits
Specific gravity and density here are at 60 °F (15.56 °C), with water at 999.016 kg/m³. For other temperatures use the correction tables in the applicable standard (API MPMS Chapter 11). The light / medium / heavy labels are the common cut-offs (31.1 and 22.3 °API), not a formal specification.
For education and quick estimates only. Check the result against the applicable standards and your project data before using it in design, operation or safety decisions.
