Reynolds number calculator

Calculate the Reynolds number for flow in a pipe and find out whether the flow is laminar, transitional or turbulent.

Inputs

Use a decimal point or decimal comma, with no thousands separators. Scientific notation is accepted.

How it works

Enter the fluid density, velocity, pipe inside diameter and dynamic viscosity. Re = ρ · v · D / μ. Below about 2 300 the flow is laminar, above about 4 000 it is turbulent, and in between it is transitional.

Formula

Re = ρ · v · D / μ

Assumptions and limits

For a full pipe with a single-phase Newtonian fluid. Viscosity is dynamic viscosity in mPa·s (the same as centipoise), not kinematic viscosity. The limits 2 300 and 4 000 are the usual guide values; the actual transition depends on pipe roughness and disturbances.

For education and quick estimates only. Check the result against the applicable standards and your project data before using it in design, operation or safety decisions.
