Equinor has opened a marine robotics test center at the Kårstø processing plant in Norway. The facility is intended for the development and qualification of underwater robots, autonomous vessels and other equipment for use in offshore operations. The announcement was published alongside a video.
The center's stated role is to serve as a site where marine robotics technology can be matured and qualified. Qualification is a key stage for equipment destined for offshore service, where systems have to show that they can perform as intended before entering regular use. A dedicated test center gives engineers a place to carry out that work in a structured setting.
Underwater robots and autonomous vessels are an area of growing attention for offshore operators. Such systems are meant to take on tasks at sea without always requiring people to work in demanding environments. Placing the test center at a processing plant connects the development work with an operating industrial setting of the kind where the technology may eventually be used.
For Equinor, the center provides a base for advancing marine robotics aimed at offshore operations. The company has positioned the facility as a place to develop and qualify the technology, which is a necessary step before such systems can be taken into regular service.
For the wider industry, the opening reflects the continued movement toward remote and autonomous technology in offshore work. Structured testing and qualification of underwater robots and autonomous vessels is part of the path toward routine use, and the Kårstø center gives that effort a dedicated home within Norway's offshore sector.
