ABB Ltd is a Zurich-registered industrial technology group that sells electrification and automation equipment and systems, including the drives, motors, switchgear, control systems and instrumentation used on offshore platforms, at LNG trains, along pipelines and inside refineries. The group reported revenues of USD 33,220 million for 2025 with operational EBITA of USD 6,314 million, an operational EBITA margin of 19.0 percent, and around 110,000 employees.

From ASEA and Brown Boveri to three business areas

ABB was formed in 1988 by the merger of ASEA of Sweden, founded in 1883, and BBC Brown Boveri of Baden, Switzerland; the new company started with revenues of USD 17 billion and 160,000 employees and was headquartered in Zurich, where ABB Ltd remains registered. The group presents three business areas today: Electrification, Motion and Automation, which between them cover low- and medium-voltage products, motors, generators and drives, and process and energy industry automation. Its portfolio also spans measurement and analytics instruments, control room equipment, electrification and automation projects delivered to process and energy customers, and a service network for installed motors, generators, drives and low- and medium-voltage equipment.

What ABB supplies to oil, gas and LNG

The oil and gas business is organised into four published sector entries: offshore, onshore, midstream and transportation, and carbon capture and storage. Products and systems sold into those sectors include the ABB Ability System 800xA distributed control system, emergency shutdown and fire and gas systems, electrical control and monitoring systems for plant power infrastructure, medium-voltage drives and synchronous motors, transformers, motor controllers and switchgear, plus measurement and analytics instruments and control room equipment. The group markets these as integrated electrical, automation and telecommunications packages for remote sites, supported by its ABB Ability digital portfolio and by a project method it calls Adaptive Execution.

Projects and installations

  • Integrated automation and electrical scope for Trains 4 and 5 of NextDecade's Rio Grande LNG project in Texas, awarded by Bechtel in March 2026 and extending work begun on Phase 1. The package includes an integrated control and safety system built on System 800xA with emergency shutdown and fire and gas functions, an electrical controls and monitoring system, medium-voltage drives, synchronous motors, transformers, motor controllers and switchgear.
  • Modernisation of the automation systems on the Buzzard offshore platform in the UK North Sea, awarded in June 2026.
  • Automation and electrification equipment for a floating green ammonia production vessel, a lube oil blending plant extension for Shell Indonesia, and support for the Bacalhau offshore oilfield in Brazil.
  • A carbon capture and storage offering, supported by the group's backing for Imperial College's CCS research programme in the UK.

Research, results and sustainability

In its second-quarter 2026 report, published on 16 July 2026, ABB recorded orders of USD 12,042 million, up 30 percent year on year, revenues of USD 9,475 million, up 14 percent, and operational EBITA of USD 1,925 million at a 20.2 percent margin; income from operations was USD 1,585 million. For the full year 2026 the company guided to a positive book-to-bill and low double-digit to low-teens comparable revenue growth.

Research and development spending reached USD 1,318 million in 2025, and the group says it invests around 4 to 5 percent of annual revenues in R&D. Its 2025 disclosures also report scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions of 134 kilotonnes of CO2 equivalent and 22.6 percent of senior management positions held by women.
